Software Management Plan Service prototype live

Software management plan sets out the goals and processes to ensure the software can access and reuse throughout the project and beyond. For additional instructions about writing and using joint management plan we have developed a prototype service plan management software, offered by the digital curation Centre services data management plan ' s, DMPonline

It is easy to focus on short-term issues when developing scientific software. The deadline for the publication, in cooperation with other people and the demands of a daily routine, all have preventedappropriate plans. A software management plan can help to formalize a set of structures and objectives of ensuring research software can access and reuse in the short, medium and long term. Italso helps the researchers to consider whether the third party software will be used in a research project will be available, and support, for the life of the project. They can also give the sponsors trust that the software they've funded survived the funding period, that there is something to show fortheir investment.

In 2012 we have written a guide on writing and using a joint management plan the researchers through the questions they should consider when developing a plan to manage the software. This has been influenced by the work of the digital curation Centre on data management plan.

We both the Advisory Board, and participants in our collaborative Workshop in 2012, suggested wesupplement our instructions with an online service. An online service that can help researchersunderstand the issues around software research, appreciate why software management plan is important and assists in the preparation of them.

Instead of creating more of a service from the start, we decided to practice what we preach and see ifwe can use an existing research results, DMPonline. DMPonline is the service data management planthe curation of digital Center helps researchers write data management plan. DMPonline is a Ruby onRailsứng and the sources are hosted on Github licensed under the GNU Affero GPL.

We take DMPonline, and updated form and its contents into a model service plan management software, which is now live. Is the source on github.

We hope this service will prompt discussion on:

The software would need to have a management plan.
What is the service like this should support, the questions to be asked, and should give advice.
Overlap between planning and data management software.
If you have any suggestions then please get in touch. Likewise, we want to collect examples ofsoftware management plan that we can link to, so if you have one you are willing to share, please letus know.

We are working closely with the digital curation Centre, provide feedback on our experience in thecustomized DMPonline-DMPonline has been implemented in a number of organizations around the world and the Digital curation Centre wants to make this easier to do. We will also discuss the overlapbetween software and project management, and whether they can be combined in some way, and if so, how. And, we will help with the development of an API for DMPonline.

Both Marta Ribeiro of the digital curation Centre and myself will be in EAPC workshop 2015 this week,lightning talks and a demo.
